The first thing I was aware of when I woke up was my phone buzzing.

The second thing was that Jolie wasn’t in my arms.

Trying to ignore the panic of her absence, I checked who was calling then answered. “About time you checked in.”

“It’s not even nine yet,” Donovan said, sounding like he’d been awake for hours. Likely the man never slept. “I figured you’d still be sleeping.”

“I figured I’d hear from you last night.” I pulled the phone away to check the exact time. Eight thirty-seven. The alarm I’d set was due to go off in eight minutes. “It’s not like we’re under a time crunch here.”

“Forgive me for having my own long-lost love to woo.”

“God, no. I can’t picture you wooing.” In my mind, Donovan’s version of the term looked more like a kidnapping and hostage situation.

“I get it. The kids never like to think about their parents having sex. Daddy won’t talk about it anymore.”

“Fuck, don’t. Do not ever refer to yourself as Daddy again.” I shuddered.

“I think I just proved my point.”

“Can we please get to what you’ve found out?” The longer we stayed in this house, the more my skin itched. It didn’t help that I’d woken up alone.

“Not a lot, but enough. Leroy said the investigation is real top secret, but he let me know that he feels pretty good about it. They apparently have an informer and tabs on the girl who went missing before Thanksgiving, Cassie Benito, and they haven’t made their move yet on Stark because they want to be sure they can get her out before anyone gets tipped off. But it’s looking like an any-day-now bust.”

I waited for relief to sweep through me, something that I wouldn’t truly be able to feel until we were gone. “In other words, it’s time to get out of here.”

“That would be my advice.”

I scrubbed my face, trying to wake up enough to get me thinking what was next.

Donovan was ahead of me. “Are you wondering if you should still plant the drive?”

That was exactly what I was getting to. “An informer doesn’t necessarily mean the deal is sealed.”

“It was a different situation when you tried to press charges,” he said, knowing exactly what I was thinking. “The FBI wouldn’t be involved if they didn’t have something more solid. With that said, you know what I’d do.”

Donovan didn’t let anything happen without being sure it would happen how he wanted it to happen. He’d still plant the drive.

I’d promised Jolie I’d destroy the motherfucker, and for that reason, I was leaning toward D’s thinking.

On the other hand, I was feeling...good. For the first time in a real long time. Vengeance wasn’t as high on my priority list as it had been a few days ago.

“I’ll leave it up to Jol.” This had been her show from the beginning. I wasn’t going to take over calling the shots.

“Pussy. Oh, while we’re on the subject. Hold on a sec.” The sound muffled, but I could hear
